CRWR 184K - (CP) Looking for Alaska: Developing Voice and Story through Coming-of-Age Fiction, Songwriting, and Poetry
This will be an exploratory, workshop style writing class with heavy emphasis on mentor texts and creative output that builds toward a unique portfolio that could only have been written by you. Together, we will investigate the sound and style of the emerging adult in the contemporary coming of age space by enlisting and unpacking songwriters like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Kendrick Lamar, poets like Hanif Abdurraqib, and Eileen Myles, as well as novelists from John Green to Gabrielle Zevin to Jason Reynolds to Rainbow Rowell and Barbara Kingsolver who represent the breadth, depth, and fluidity of the coming of age experience from adolescence to early adulthood.
CRWR 184J - (CP) Bite by Bite: The Art of Food Writing
In this creative writing class, we will explore ways in which food writing can serve as a vehicle to explore issues of identity, memory, and social justice. Our title is taken from Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s book of essays, which we will read alongside additional personal essays, memoir, profiles, and reportage. Through a series of exercises and workshops, students will build a portfolio of their own food writing, drawing on themes and techniques we study together.
