LING 171 - (IS) Sociolinguistics

This course is an introduction to sociolinguistics, the study of how groups of people use language. It examines the relationship between linguistic and non-linguistic variables, such as the social-economic background of speakers, in particular age, education, gender, and lifestyle choices, and their relationship to language. It further explores the various uses of language, including speech acts, identity construction, discourse, and conversational analysis, and the way in which language reflects ideologies and relations of power.
