ENGL 008T - Great Writers: Lynda Barry

This 1.5 credit course will be a creative companion to the visit of the renowned cartoonist Lynda Barry who will come to Hofstra for the Great Writers Great Readings series on October 22nd, 2025. Barry is one of the most important creative thinkers of our time. We will use her work, her lectures, her writings to explore the nature of creativity. Through writing (and drawing) prompts we will explore some of her most important lessons—silencing the inner critic, the freedom (and power) of drawing like a child again, seeing what’s right in front of us through conscious observation. The course is comprised of six class sessions, including the writer’s visit. In addition to the daily work of keeping an observation notebook, there will be one paper—a creative response to Barry’s work, lessons, and visit. Students will also create questions for the conversation with Barry. Class will meet at 6.00 PM on the following dates: 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, and 10/29. There will be one bonus workshop with Lynda Barry on 10/23 if your schedules permit. There is no pre-requisite for this class and all welcome.
