RELI 160 - (HP) Religion, Secularism and Conflict ResolutionSemester Hours: 3 Fall, Spring
An essential tenet of religious studies and interfaith studies is not tolerance, but rather seeing and respecting the differences between various secular-religious cultures. Furthermore, while peace-building efforts worldwide aim to operationalize the resources religions possess for conflict resolution , scholarship in peace studies goes beyond treating religion as either a force for violence or peace, by drawing a wider geopolitical frame. This course will therefore broach conflict resolution with a broader theoretical context that includes questioning both religious revelation and secular reason – and in so doing chart a history of secular liberal peace-building to explore its limits and possible alternatives.
