JRNL 012 - AI, Media, and Journalism

Semester Hours: 3
This course explores the technology, use cases, and impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism and communication. This hands-on course gives students the opportunity to use a variety of generative AI tools for text, video, sound, and image to gain a better understanding of their abilities and limitations in the service of the news. Students will learn best practices for prompt engineering for large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, create advanced custom chatbots, and fine-tune their AI models. Students discuss existing and potential applications for communication professionals and consider accompanying ethical issues. The course demands that students reflect on how the emerging technology will transform the production of news and the way the public engages with it. Students re-examine the nature of creativity, the role of authorship, and the media’s relationship with truth and authenticity. No prior experience with AI technology or coding knowledge is necessary.Lab fees are additional.Lab fees are additional.
