MASS 129 - Children and MediaSemester Hours: 3 Periodically
This course takes a critical and analytical approach to the multi-faceted relationship between children and media. Students examine ways in which children are socialized in an unprecedentedly mediatized world, how media professionals are having to frequently wrestle with this more media literate group of consumers and the more fragmented market they present, and the multi-stakeholder effort of moderation as well as education that governments, schools, social institutions, and parents alike need to engage in on a consistent basis. Subjects we explore include, but are not limited to, body image, fan culture, education, gaming, social media and new technology, parenting, socioeconomic factors (class, race, gender, sexuality, ability, advertising, monetization), radicalization, community building, youth movement. Students exercise their critical thinking skills, independent research and writing skills, and presentation skills.
