MASS 191 - Exploration of New York City Media

Semester Hours: 2

Once a Year, Spring

This course, also known as the Hofstra in NYC program, is designed to motivate students to consider career paths they may not have been aware of before their participation. This is an immersive, two-credit course which begins in the late spring semester with five class meetings designed to inform students on the shape of these industries and prepare them for their one-week, Manhattan-based immersive experience.

The lecture portion of the course will concentrate on various characteristics of the communication industry based in New York City including production, distribution and promotion of news and entertainment products, as well as advocacy of clients within the entertainment and information industries. Students will prepare for interactions with practitioners involved with talent and artist management, producers and creative departments, newsrooms and public relations representatives, and observe promotional synergies between corporations and production companies. After class meetings, students dorm in Manhattan and visit film, television and radio production studios, soundstages, newsrooms, public relations agencies and departments, museums, and other related institutions. Students also host two networking events at which working professionals in various communication fields will interact, advise and mentor.
