SPED 201 - The Exceptional Child Semester Hours: 3 Fall, Spring
This course introduces the historical, social, and legal foundations of special education, employment and independence for individuals with disabilities, and the responsibilities of teachers and other professionals. Areas of coverage include categories of disabilities; identification and remediation of disabilities; the special education process and state and federal special education laws and regulations; effective practices for planning and designing co-teaching and collaboration with peers; individualizing instruction; and applying positive behavioral supports and interventions to address student and classroom management needs. Emphasis on enhancing the learning of all students in inclusive and other settings. Current trends, critical issues, and research relevant to individuals with special learning needs as full members of their communities are examined. Students are required to complete 20 hours of field work in special education settings (grades Pre-K -12).
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
