SPED 242 - Psychoeducational Assessment in Special Education Semester Hours: 3 Fall, Spring
The main purpose of this course is to understand the process of psychoeducational assessment, its relationship to instructional planning for exceptional children, the process of growth and development in early childhood, childhood, middle childhood and adolescence and how to provide learning experience and conduct assessments reflecting understanding of those processes. Areas of coverage include formal and informal methods of assessing student learning and the means of analyzing one’s own teaching practice – and skill in using information gathered through assessment and analysis to plan or modify instruction, and skill in using various resources to enhance teaching. The objectives of this course are to familiarize students with the foundations of assessment in special education and the basic concepts in descriptive statistics and measurement of behavior; present a variety of diagnostic-prescriptive and dynamic assessment strategies; provide skills in evaluating and interpreting norm and criterion-referenced tests; evaluate the efficacy of authentic discriminatory testing; and assist students in the integration and reporting of assessment information as the basis for effective instructional planning. Students will be required to complete 15 hours performing an individualized assessment used in special education settings for grades 7-12.
