SPED 245 - Curriculum and Methods for Students With Diverse Learning Needs Semester Hours: 3 Fall, Spring
Current trends in program organization, curriculum development, adaptation, and teaching strategies for students along the full range of exceptionalities are reviewed and evaluated. Areas of coverage include curriculum development, instructional planning, and multiple research-validated instructional strategies for teaching students within the full range of abilities in the areas of reading, math and writing. A major focus of the course is on research-based best practices, with an emphasis on analysis of assessment, development of IEP goals, monitoring progress, and implementing specially designed instruction. Methods to facilitate the development of accessible materials across all content areas are learned. Culturally relevant competencies and universal design for learning lesson planning are emphasized. Transition of students to other learning and employment environments are explored. Students are required to complete - 20 hours of observation in a special education setting, grades 1-12
