RUS 155 - Women in Russian Society (1830-1917): Writers and Rebels

Semester Hours: 3

Periodically

In this course we will examine how Russian women’s writing prior to the 1917 Revolution reflects shifts in social and esthetic awareness. Early Russian feminism emerged in response to the repressive regime of Nicholas I (1825-1855), the emancipation of the serfs (1862), the assassination of Alexander II (1881), the anti-semitic programs in the final years of the nineteenth century, and the first Russian revolution of 1905. The course is conducted entirely in Russian.
