ASST 14 - (CC, LT) Vietnam in American, English, French, and Vietnamese Literatures

This course approaches the complex history and culture of Vietnam through narratives written in French, English and Vietnamese. The cross-cultural and cross-continental perspecives adopted will allow students to understand the struggles encountered by those who wish to assert individual creativity against the powerful forces in place to categorize and define their identity. Novels, autobiographical narratives and short stories about colonial Indochina and post-colonial Vietnam will
serve as a basis for discussion and exploration. French and Vietnamese works will be read in English translation.
