An exploration of the ways in which three religious traditions attempt to guide
their adherents’ conduct by appealing to rules of action. Course begins by clarifying
the notions of “ethics” and “religion.” We then turn to three traditions-for example,
the Navaho, the Gospel of Matthew, and to Theravada Buddhism, asking how each
tradition conceives of the relation between religious and moral rules (we also
ask whether that distinction is even helpful). While the student is asked to master
a body of historical materials, the emphasis is philosophical throughout; we mainly
want to understand how each tradition understands such basic notions as action,
obligation, the moral authority of persons, deity or deities, and institutions,
and the status of other religious and moral frameworks.
