This course explores African-American religious oractice, a practice which has played a central role in the world views and social contexts of black people in the United States, and thus in American history as well. The course explores the traditional religions of enslaved Africans, 20th-century nationalist faiths, and contemporary black religious diversity. African-American peoples’ religious journeys have led through Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Rastafarianism (and other religions), but have almost always involved the realities and rhetorics of “black,” “white,” and “race.” The course emphasizes three intertwined approaches: critical analysis of the history and hermeneutics of race; close reading of primary sources; amd first-hand field trips and “race experiments.”
