RUS 156 - Dostoevsky’s Underground Man in Russian LiteratureSemester Hours: 3
Periodically
No work of Russian literature is more controversial than Dostoevsky’s Notes From the Underground. We will examine several different perspectives on the novel, starting with its
first critical reception in 1864 and continuing to the present day.
Readings include subsequent manifestations of Dostoevsky’s rebellious anti-hero in the
works of Tolstoy, Kuprin, Gorky, Venedikt Erofeev, Edward Limonov and Tatiana
Tolstaya. The course is conducted entirely in Russian.
