MATH 006A - The Real Numbers and College AlgebraSemester Hours: 3
Fall, Spring
This course covers the real numbers, the real number line, the basic laws and definitions of arithmetic, how these laws and definitions contribute to the theory manipulating algebraic expressions and solving algebraic equations, graphs of equations, functions, graphs of functions (linear, quadratic, polynomial, and rational), algebraic inequalities, and applications of such. There are no calculators allowed in the course. The emphasis will be to develop an intuitive feel for the real numbers and the concepts involved, an understanding of the reason and rigor behind the algorithms and developing skill using algorithms. The course will be divided into the following four units: (1) the real numbers and laws of arithmetic; (2) basic algebra; (3) intermediate algebra; and (4) college algebra. Successful completion of all four units will result in a grade of P.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Permission of mathematics chairperson required if student has received a grade of C- or better in a mathematics course with a number higher than 6. Grading is mandatory Pass/Fail.
