LAW 2893 - Law and international Economic Development

This course considers the relationship between law and economic development. It begins by reviewing economic theories of the role of law in facilitating economic growth, the role of private investors and public international institutions in the promotion of legal reforms in developing countries, and the normative critiques of these efforts. The course will then consider substantive areas of legal reform in developing countries, such as securities, commercial, property, and corporate law, where law may or may not “matter” in economic development. Finally, the course will consider case studies of legal reform in certain developing countries. A paper or a series of short papers are required.
