CAT 283D: Special Topics: Play and Sandtray Therapy

Semester Hours: 3


This course will introduce two therapeutic applications. The first, Play Therapy, includes an overview of the history, theories, techniques/methods and applications of Play Therapy. Emphasis will be on relationship between play therapy and the other various therapeutic interventions. Toys and materials including those for sandplay will be discussed with relation to how to set up a playroom and how to decide which materials are appropriate for each play session. Students will become knowledgeable with cultural issues with relation to play.

The second portion of the course will focus on the foundations and history of Jungian sandplay therapy. Overview of Jungian theory and various sub-theories applicable to sandplay practice will be examined. The relationship of sandplay to other play therapies and to creative arts therapy will be considered through case study and individual process. Students will be taught theories of personality, symbolization and the individuation process with relation to sandplay therapy. This course also focuses on cultural diversity, institutional and ethical issues in clinical practice.
