Quantitative Reasoning Requirement

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Majors and Minors

Students matriculating in Fall 2018 or later must complete one course designated as Quantitative Reasoning (QR). Note: The planned phase-in of requiring two QR courses in Fall 2020 was suspended.

The Quantitative Reasoning requirement applies to students who are working toward the BA degree for a major in the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (See BA Requirements).

The quantitative Reasoning (QR) tag applies to individual sections of a course—not to the course itself. For example, a department may offer five sections of a course, three of which carry the QR tag and two of which do not carry the tag. Similarly, a section may carry the QR tag during one semester, but not the next semester.

To view sections that carry the QR tag in a given semester, go to “Look up Classes” in the portal, select the semester, and then select Quantitative Reasoning Course from the Distribution & Attribute Type list. After registering for a QR course, you can check your degree audit to confirm that the course is applied to the QR category.
