Chemistry, BS Major in

The Department of Chemistry ’s program for the BS major in chemistry is accredited by the American Chemical Society if the appropriate options are selected (see below). A student completing this course of study will be awarded a certificate from the Society.

Program Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 124


This program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in chemistry. It is especially recommended to those students preparing to enter industry or to pursue graduate work. Candidates for graduation must fulfill the requirements listed below:

1. The Successful Completion of at Least 124 Semester Hours


The successful completion of at least 124 semester hours and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in work completed at Hofstra. Military Science 001C, 001E, 002C, 002E and associated leadership laboratories may not be counted toward this total semester hour requirement.

2. Liberal Arts


At least 65 semester hours must be in liberal arts courses.

3. Residence Requirements


There are two requirements that must ordinarily be completed in residence at Hofstra: 15 semester hours in the major field of specialization and the last 30 semester hours. The 15 semester hours need not be included within the last 30 hours.

4. General Requirements

Social Science and Humanities


15 semester hours of distribution courses; social science: 3 hours in behavioral social sciences (BH) and 3 hours in history and philosophy (HP); humanities: 3 hours in literature (LT) and 3 hours in the Arts: either Appreciation and Analysis (AA) or creative participation (CP); 3 hours chosen from any of the following categories (LT, AA, CP, BH, HP, CC, or IS).

6. Advanced Lecture Electives
