(This program was formerly titled Classics and has changed to Greek and Roman Studies for the 24-25 academic year.)
There are two major concentrations in Greek and Roman Studies at Hofstra:
- The concentration in Greek and Roman Languages and Literatures emphasizes language training in ancient Greek and/or Latin. It provides the student with a strong background in classical literature and in related areas of study within classics – for example, ancient history, philosophy, art history, and the religious traditions of Greece and Rome and early Christianity.
- The concentration in Greek and Roman Civilizations focuses on the literature of antiquity (taught in translation), along with additional emphases on the ancient languages and related areas of study within Greek and Roman Studies– for example, ancient history, philosophy, art history, and the religious traditions of Greece and Rome and early Christianity.
Greek and Roman Studies majors interested in pursuing the study of law and/or medicine should take courses emphasizing the origins of medical and legal thought in antiquity. HIST 123 and RHET 005 are recommended for students interested in law, and CLL 046 is recommended for students interested in medicine.
