Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs (Alphabetically, University-wide)

Program Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 30

Spanish is the second language in the world with regard to the number of native speakers. It is also the second language in the United States, with an increasing political, economic, and cultural influence in the country. Fluency in the Spanish language and knowledge of the culture(s) of the Spanish-speaking world is key to being competitive in the increasingly multilingual world of the 21st century.

Hofstra University’s BA in Spanish helps students improve their communicative skills while enhancing their understanding of the culture, literature, history, linguistics, and politics of the Spanish-speaking world –globally and in the U.S.

Our BA takes the students from their starting level of proficiency into specialized courses, which can be combined with a number of other programs on campus, including specializations in European Studies or Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Students can choose their own path in consultation with a faculty advisor. The teaching and research interests of our international faculty are wide and varied, and the courses we offer reflect that diversity.

The B.A. in Spanish requires 30 semester hours as specified below:

Category I - At least 9 Semester Hours

Students should take at least three courses (9 s.h.) in this category based on their linguistic proficiency and their interests.

Category II - At least 15 Semester Hours

Students should take at least five courses (15 s.h.) in this category, based on their interests.

Category III. At least 6 Semester Hours

Students should take an additional two courses (6 s.h.) from either Category I or II to result in the required 30 total semester hours for the degree.

Note:

Honors Seminars with a specific focus on the Spanish-speaking world (particularly if related to literature, culture, music, etc.) might receive credit for the B.A. in Spanish with the approval of the Department on a case-by-case basis.
