The BA major in Japanese provides students with a solid foundation of Japanese language skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension.  In addition, through carefully selected foundational and elective courses, students gain an understanding of Japan’s literary and cultural traditions and history.  Students are encouraged to augment their study of Japanese at Hofstra with study abroad.

124 semester hours of course work, including at least 94 semester hours in liberal arts courses

Students in the major may complete a capstone project, in which they may write a senior or honors thesis on a literary or non-literary topic, create an annotated translation or a multimedia project, or some other experience approved by the program director. Students may satisfy the capstone requirement with other coursework, as deemed appropriate, in consultation with the program director.
