The Bachelor of Science with a major in Nursing program, through an interprofessional learning model, prepares graduates for the Registered Nurse (RN) role providing quality, holistic, scientifically sound, evidenced-based patient-centered care while optimizing the health and well-being of diverse populations and communities for the betterment of humanity. The purpose of the baccalaureate in nursing program is to prepare nurses to be providers, innovators, leaders, managers, and care coordinators as well as ethical members of the nursing profession.
The major in Nursing degree provides the educational, clinical, and experiential base for entry-level professional practice as well as the platform on which to build a career through graduate-level study. The baccalaureate curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for lifelong learning and an active role in all facets of innovative quality health care delivery systems in a variety of acute and primary care settings.
The RN role emphasizes preventative health care for individuals, as well as health assessments; diagnosis and treatment of a patient’s unique responses to health problems; execution of medical regimens as prescribed by licensed clinicians; advocacy for communities affected by health inequities and contribution to society as interprofessional team members. Through the program pillars of leadership, scholarship and professionalism, students acquire the values of leadership, scholarship, collaboration, innovation, excellence, global health, humanism, learning, courage, and diversity.
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program prepares graduates to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), a major requirement for the license to practice. Graduates are prepared to deliver patient centered care as members of an interprofessional team, emphasizing evidence-based practice, cultural sensitivity, quality improvement, value-based health care, and informatics competencies. The Baccalaureate-prepared RN role includes the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic illness as well as implementing and preventative health care strategies for individuals, families/significant others, groups, communities, and diverse and vulnerable populations in a variety of acute and primary care settings. Baccalaureate-prepared nurse practice includes both direct and indirect care for individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations. The program incorporates national standards such as The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education (AACN, 2021) and The Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPEC, 2016).

Freshman Direct Entry Admission Requirements
Nursing applications will be reviewed holistically, but we anticipate the averages for admitted students to be an SAT score of 1250 (evidence-based reading and writing + math sections) or an ACT score of 28, and a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.6. Note: Applicants may apply with test-optional admission Applicants must have a strong background in mathematics and science (e.g. algebra, biology, and chemistry). A high school biology and/or chemistry course with the laboratory is strongly recommended. Transfer and Change of Major Admission Requirements
The following applies to students wishing to transfer into the nursing program from outside Hofstra and current Hofstra students seeking to change their major to nursing. - Transfer students include those that completed at least one semester of college and should not submit an application until semester grades have been finalized. Internal transfer (change of major) students must meet the nursing program admission guidelines outlined to be considered for admission.
- Hofstra’s academic programming requires a minimum of 3 years of full-time study to complete the BS in Nursing. This means that students will be entering as either a freshman or sophomore even though credit hours may equate to a junior or senior. This may affect students’ timelines for completing their overall undergraduate degree as well as impact their scholarship allocations.
- Students interested in transferring into Hofstra’s nursing program are subject to all policies related to Hofstra University’s transfer credit policy for all non-major requirements.
- Transferring students may request a credit evaluation before applying through undergraduate admissions.
- Transfer students who do not have an associate degree or higher must submit a copy of their high school transcript as proof of high school graduation.
- A minimum cumulative college grade point average of 2.75 is required for admission. The program is highly selective, and a 2.75 GPA does not guarantee admission.

- Transfer credit will not be awarded for any clinical nursing course.
- Transfer credit will be awarded for grades of C+ or higher.
- Courses transferring in for credit must be completed within 7 years of the date of enrollment.
- Biology and chemistry transfer courses must include a lab component in order to be considered for transfer credit or for degree completion.
