Elementary School STEM Specialist, Adv. Cert.

This advanced certificate program prepares elementary school teachers for on-site positions as school and district STEM specialists who serve as resources to their peer teachers. They will be prepared in STEM content, pedagogical alternatives, reform-based curriculum, multiple assessment methodologies and leadership skills.

This program is intended for teachers who have master’s degrees, are currently certified in elementary education and who are seeking continued professional development. Students who complete this program will:

  • Know mathematics and science curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Understand how engineering design improves content knowledge.
  • Be able to effectively integrate computer technology into multi-subject lessons.
  • Realized the importance of hand-on collaborative learning.
  • Recognize students as diverse learners with a variety of learning styles.

On average, students complete this program in one academic year.

Admission Requirements


Applications for admission to this advanced certificate program in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Technology  are made to the Office of Graduate Admission. Students who do not fully meet admission requirements may be required to complete prerequisite courses concurrently with the completion of the program requirements. Admission is based on a comprehensive review of multiple criteria. The department understands that any single criterion may not reliably predict a student’s potential for success in the program.

  1. A valid New York state teaching certificate.
  2. A master’s degree.
  3. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0.

Graduation Requirements


  1. Completion of all program requirements.
  2. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in all course work.
