LAW 3986 - Voting Rights and Election Law

This course considers regulation of the right to vote and otherwise participate in the political process. It begins with an overview of the restrictions on the franchiseresidency requirements, discrimination on the basis of sex and race, and registration practices. The bulk of the course considers constitutional and statutory constraints on apportionment and districting–one person, one vote, political and racial gerrymandering, and the role of the Voting Rights Act. We may also consider legal regulation of political parties and constitutional issues in campaign finance.
