Law 3601 - The Expert Witness in Civil Litigation

This is a simulation course designed to introduce students to the use of experts in civil litigation.  Each student will represent either the plaintiff or defendant in a simulated case and will utilize an expert in the field of linguistics, played by a graduate student enrolled in Hofstra’s program in Forensic Linguistics. Students enrolled in the course will consult with their experts, and file written expert reports.  They will take and defend the depositions of experts.  And they will conduct one or more in-court hearings: a motion hearing on the experts’ qualifications or the trial testimony of the experts, or both.  Prior to these performances, students will learn the relevant legal background.

Prerequisites & Notes
Evidence and Pretrial: Depositions are helpful but not required.

No exam – evidence based on course performance.

Students should anticipate that they will have to spend a good deal of preparation time interacting with other students to prepare for course activities.
