PR 278 - Communicating the Climate Change Crisis

Semester Hours: 3
Almost every business and organization will be impacted by climate change if they are not already, and communicators will need to be familiar with the numerous related issues and their expected impact. Public relations professionals will also have to understand what tools they can use – including the development of key messages and the importance of social media, to name but two – to effectively communicate to key stakeholders. Additionally, PR practitioners will be faced with addressing the concerns of their employees, who are becoming more and more sensitive to “green” issues. This course will provide students with a broad-based understanding of the major communications challenges that climate change presents while reinforcing skills that are used throughout the PR profession: research and writing, critical thinking and analysis, the understanding of target audiences, the development of key messages, the ethics of communications and much more. Students will understand the climate crisis and prepare them to effectively communicate their companies’ key messages to a wide variety of publics and audiences.
