DPT 536 - Advanced Electives: Alternative and Complementary Medicine


Semester Hours: 1
Advanced electives subjects are chosen from topics/subjects offered by the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. This course covers the basic principles, underlying mechanism, level of evidence and clinical application of the most common alternative and complementary therapists (CATs) used for individuals with movement disorders. This includes therapies such as Yoga, Feldenkrais, Pilates, Tai Chi, Alexander technique, Acupuncture, Cupping technique, Meditation, Hippotherapy, and Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy. This course will provide evidence-based CATs for patients with movement disorders and will highlight the use and clinical applications of CATs for patients with movement disorders. Selected application of CATs will be presented using videos of individuals with movement disorders.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Prerequisites for this course include all preceding coursework in the curriculum. Any exceptions require approval from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program Director.  May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
