HIT 219 - Introduction to Public Health Informatics

This course will provide students with an introduction to the fundamentals of public and population health informatics and relevant concepts and related informatics domains. The purpose of these branches of health informatics is the continuous monitoring of public health events, planning and surveillance of public health programs, and the management of public health research. This course will provide an overview of public and population health principles and discussed the legal and ethical issues they present. Students will be introduced to the concepts of big data, cloud computing, and other emerging technological innovations that can contribute to the improvement of population health. The course will also provide students with a knowledge of issues related to privacy, security, and confidentiality related to health data collection, storage, and processing.
