HIST 188A - Seminar: Non-Western History

Semester Hours: 4

Periodically
This course focuses on a selected theme, issue, problem, region, country, or period in the history of non-Western peoples in the period 200 b.c.e. to the present.

Current Special Topics:

Revolutions and Rebellions in Modern History

Revolutions challenge us to consider what change means, how it happens, and who controls its course. The most profound or abrupt moments of transformation may be called “revolutions.” From the Spartacus to the Mexican to the Consumer, historians are fascinated by revolutions. This advanced research seminar guides students through the copious historical work on revolutions. We will work together to develop student projects on this theme that engage them deeply in research and writing as a capstone experience.

Prerequisites: HIST 102  and HIST 103

Rewriting History

This seminar will give you a deeper understanding of why we choose to rewrite history and the various ways in which we reimagine the past(s). Specifically, we are interested in the following questions: How have errors, incompleteness, and forgotten dreams influenced the way that we reimagine the past? What purpose does revision and rewriting serve in the study of history? Can we rework the messy, complex relationships that we have with our own past histories? To answer these questions, we will first focus on a set of common readings that grapple with the idea of reimagination and how we shape our understandings of the past not through writing but rewriting. You will then revise a past history paper that you have written and transform it into an original research paper based on primary sources.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
HIST 102  and 103 . May be repeated for credit when topics vary. (Formerly 3 s.h.)
