RTVF 140 - Advanced Documentary ProductionSemester Hours: 3 Fall, Spring
This advanced course focuses on the theories and practices of non-fiction filmmaking. It equips the student with the theoretical framework and production skill sets to excel in the documentary industry. Focus is placed on developing a unique writing style that is clear, concise, visual and compelling. The course delves into the process of developing a documentary concept from a preliminary pitch to a fully realized treatment, focusing on ensuring its viability. Students are expected to perform thorough research and investigation for their proposed topic.
Through readings, screenings, lectures and hands-on experience, the student will explore documentary structure and navigate the entire production journey, from filming to post-production. The course culminates in learning how to prepare a final 10-12 minute film for exhibition accompanied by a distribution and marketing plan. The student will gain the confidence to direct documentaries independently or for commission.
