Fall, January, Spring, Summer
Investigation of advanced, specialized, and emerging topics in professional and scientific psychology.
Current Special Topics:
PSY 251A - Teams
In this seminar we will learn about the science of groups and teams by exploring various topics relevant to team functioning and effectiveness (e.g., team cognition, team leadership, team composition). The course is designed to be fully interactive and discussion-based, with readings and assignments designed to stimulate critical, integrative thinking regarding the issues surrounding teams in the workplace. By the end of this course, students will…
• Have a general knowledge of the current state of team science and practice
• Be able to think and speak critically about teams in organizations
• Be able to distill best practices and concrete recommendations from the scientific literature for organizations wanting to develop and improve work teams
• Have gained experience diagnosing a team and providing recommendations
• Prepare a research proposal for advancing the science of groups and teams
PSY 251B - Qualitative
Industrial-Organizational Psychology has traditionally placed a strong emphasis on “hard” quantifiable, objective date. However, in many work settings we are presented with verbal narratives and open-ended survey and interview responses. Fortunately, a rich interdisciplinary literature for extracting meaning from non-qualitative date has evolved. This course will acquaint I-O psychologists with approaches that can be useful for analyzing information from sources such as interviews, focus groups, and open-ended questions.
PSY 251C - Diversity
The course will introduce you to theories and research related to the psychological study of diversity and inclusion as it applies to organizations. A broad coverage of topies and issues relevant to the job will be discussed, including general theories of diversity and inclusion as well as specific minority topics (such as race, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, and religion). In addition, unique issues surrounding workplace diversity and inclusion (such as discrimination, intersectionality, and interventions) will be discussed.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Permission of the director of the MA , PhD or PsyD program. May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
