MPH 280-289 A-Z - Special Topics in Public Health


Semester Hours: 1-3

Designed to expose students to emerging issues in the field of public health, not otherwise addressed in depth in the curriculum. Faculty will work together to identify areas of expertise that would enrich the existing curriculum and be of interest to students.

Current Special Topics

MPH 280R - Internship in Health Informatics

Internship in Health Informatics is an Elective open to International Graduate Students enrolled in the Master of Science in Health Informatics program. Students may work a maximum of 20 hours during fall and spring, and up to 40 hours during the summer. Work duties must be directly aligned with curriculum objectives for Health Informatics.

Permission of department chairperson, or graduate program director, a minimum grade point average of 3.2 overall, and a minimum of 18 s.h. in Health Informatics.

MPH 280S - Athletic Training Culminating Experience

This course is offered only for students enrolled in the MS in Athletic Training program. This 1 credit course is offered as a companion course to support the implementation of the students culminating experience projects and professional certification board exam preparations.

Only open to MS in Athletic Training Students

MPH 280 - AI & Deep Learning Models for Medical Research

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the applications and future directions of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, with an emphasis on recent advancements and challenges. Students will explore data processing techniques, including data cleaning, feature extraction, and dimensionality reduction, alongside fundamental AI concepts, before progressing to advanced machine learning and deep learning techniques applied in areas such as medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, predictive analysis, natural language processing (NLP), clinical decision support systems (CDSS), and healthcare operations. 

MPH 281C - OTH Level II Fieldwork Seminar

This advanced course provides students with opportunities to integrate academic learning into direct clinical practice. Through supervised fieldwork, students refine professional behaviors, apply clinical reasoning, and demonstrate entry-level competence. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based practice, ethics, and reflective professional growth as guided by ACOTE 2023 Standards (C.1.1–C.1.16).

Notes/prerequisites: Students must successfully complete coursework OTH 223 and OTH 213 before the fieldwork seminar.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
As individual subjects are selected, each is assigned a letter (A-Z) and added to the course number. Any course can be taken a number of times so long as there is a different letter designation each time it is taken. Specific titles and course descriptions for special topics courses are available in the online class schedule. May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
