DPT 505 - Clinical Neuroscience


Semester Hours: 2
This course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the basic structure, organization, function of the nervous system, and its relationship to selected disease processes, emphasizing the application of this knowledge to clinical practice and rehabilitation. This course emphasizes the identification of neural processes, structure, and functional relationships of the nervous system. This course focuses on neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and the sensory and motor systems governing posture and movement. Students will be expected to recall and apply information from previous coursework in a clinically relevant manner. The course’s pedagogical approach will include an emphasis on problem-based learning to encourage active student participation and clinical decision-making. The course content has been designed to provide the student with an understanding of the basic anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, the basic function of the nervous system, and the relationship between damage to the nervous system and dysfunction, the fundamentals of sensory processing, and integration, the fundamentals of motor control, posture and balance and the phenomena of motor, sensory and cognitive dysfunction.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Open only to students enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
