DPT 506 - Introduction to Examination


Semester Hours: 3
This course introduces students to models of clinical practice with an emphasis on basic examination skills. The course prepares students in using the ICF model and the Guide to PT Practice for an interview, system review, outcomes, the selection and justification of appropriate tests and measures, the development of a basic evaluation, and the selection and justification for basic interventions for the individual patient. This course covers basic physical examinations including screening process, history taking, systems review, physiologic status, basic cardiopulmonary assessment, posture, flexibility, range of motion, strength/motor performance, soft tissue assessment, and clinical assessment of gait. This course prepares the physical therapy student to develop competence in basic concepts of clinical decision-making and problem-solving in physical therapy examination.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Open only to students enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
