DPT 515 - Clinical Care Skills


Semester Hours: 2
This course focuses on developing knowledge, skills, problem-solving, and clinical decision making in proper patient care and basic clinical care skills including basic exercise training; principles of body mechanics; assessment of vital signs; transfer techniques; bed mobility training; wheelchair design, measurement and management; patient positioning and draping; gait training; wheelchair management, and use of ambulatory assistive devices. The course focuses on the acute care in-hospital setting including the most common lines, tubes, and drains encountered in the acute care environment. The course contents include the most common physical therapy examination and interventions, selected post-surgical physical therapy intervention protocols, equipment, documentation, and discharge planning in the acute care setting. Lab sessions provide the opportunity to develop and practice these basic patient care skills and apply this knowledge to simple patient case examples and simulated patient settings.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Prerequisites for this course include all preceding coursework in the curriculum. Any exceptions require approval from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT).  May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
