DPT 516 - Pharmacology in Physical Therapy


Semester Hours: 2
This course provides the fundamental knowledge of different drug classifications and the pharmacodynamics of the most frequently used drugs. The course presents the mechanisms of action, drug class, indications, contraindications, side effects, monitoring parameters, and drug interaction. Special emphasis on drugs that are frequently used to treat conditions that are commonly seen in physical therapy including but not limited to anti-hypertensive, anti-arrhythmic, atherosclerotic, pulmonary, anti-spasticity, muscle relaxants, anti-seizure, anesthesia, anti- inflammatory, opioids/ pain medication, endocrine and metabolic agents, anti-rheumatic agents, psychopharmacologic agents, chemotherapy agents, alternative medicine agents, and performance enhancing agents. How drug therapy interacts with physical therapy, and how drugs can exert beneficial effects and adverse side effects that impact rehabilitation will be addressed.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Prerequisites for this course include all preceding coursework in the curriculum. Any exceptions require approval from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT).  May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
