DPT 521 - Neuromuscular Physical Therapy I

This course is the first in a series of two courses on examination, evaluation, and interventions of the patient with neurologic dysfunctions. This course presents pathology, disease process, clinical presentations, differential diagnosis, medical management, neuromuscular examination, standardized assessment, outcome measurement, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, and clinical decision-making for a patient/client with neuromuscular dysfunctions. The course covers the intervention techniques used in the treatment of people with neuromuscular dysfunctions including task-oriented training, functional training, neurodevelopmental treatment, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitations. The course focuses on physical therapy management of the patients with neuromuscular dysfunctions of the brain such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebellar disorders, and traumatic brain injury.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Prerequisites for this course include all preceding coursework in the curriculum. Any exceptions require approval from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program Director. May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
