DPT 522 - Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy


Semester Hours: 3
This course covers the physical therapy management of individuals with cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders including those with significant co-morbidities and critical illness. This course focuses on pathology, clinical presentation, examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, standardized assessments, outcome measures, clinical decision- making and designing effective rehabilitation programs for the patient with cardiovascular and pulmonary dysfunctions.  This course covers auscultation, measurement of respiratory muscle strength, principles of cardiac rehabilitation, exercise testing, ECG interpretation, critical illness induced myopathy/weakness, use of supplemental oxygen at rest and during exercise, ventilator induced diaphragm dysfunction and treatment, and mobilizing ventilator dependent patients.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Prerequisites for this course include all preceding coursework in the curriculum. Any exceptions require approval from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program Director.  May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
