DPT 514 - Heath Promotion and Wellness


Semester Hours: 2
This course discusses the roles and responsibilities of physical therapists for addressing population health issues including promoting health across the lifespan. The course covers fundamental concepts of health, wellness, prevention, screening for risk, and the theoretical bases underlying behavior change. Elements of physical activity, nutrition, medical/complimentary strategies, behaviors/risk factors modification are included.  The course also covers issues of health behavior, public policy, community access and efficacy of individual and group programs. Elements of effective interprofessional, community-based, and rehabilitation programs will be explored. The course presents and discusses screening, examination, and assessment to evaluate the health status of a client and help identify when an appropriate referral is needed. Strategies and plans for prevention and promoting health and wellness will be discussed including lifestyle modifications, nutrition, activity, individuals, and community-based programs that contribute to health promotion and disease prevention. Students will then explore scientific evidence related to promoting physical activity, reducing sedentarism, and improving individual and population health.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Prerequisites for this course include all preceding coursework in the curriculum. Any exceptions require approval from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT).  May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
