LYST 242C - Literacy Practicum: Supporting Early Childhood and Childhood Learners (Pre- K - Grade 4) Semester Hours: 3 This supervised internship engages teachers in a student advocacy model of assessment and instruction that values cultural and linguistic diversity and builds upon young learners’ experiences and understandings. The practicum includes a supervised internship as a literacy specialist providing individual and small group literacy support for readers and writers who struggle. Interns are responsible for literacy evaluations that document children’s development and understandings, and assessment driven instructional planning that includes literature engagements, collaborative learning, multimodal literacy invitations, and strategy instruction. There is a focus on working. With families and communicating with colleagues; interns prepare biographic profiles documenting learners’ literacy development. Emphasis on Pre-K to Grade 4. A 25-hour practicum at the Saltzman Reading/Writing Learning Clinic is required.
