GEOG 106 - (BH, CC) Urbanization in the Developing World Periodically
Coping with rapid urbanization and the uncontrolled growth of cities, poses one
of the greatest geographical challenges facing the nations of the developing world.
This course introduces students to the study of urbanization in the developing
world and explores the urban problems such as insufficient infrastructure, unemployment,
lack of housing and inadequate social services that occur in these cities. The
course has a regional focus and looks at the development of cities in Latin America,
Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and North Africa and the Middle East, highlighting each
regions distinctive urban patterns and problems. The last section of the course
looks at possible solutions and policies that could be adopted to help alleviate
the problems of rapid urbanization and poverty in the cities of the developing
world.
