Accounting, BBA Major in


This program qualifies students for general accounting careers in business, but does not satisfy in full the educational requirements for licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in New York state. (Note: New York state and most other states require 150 semester hours of course work for licensure as a CPA.Students intending to pursue careers in public accounting are advised to consider the three options outlined below. Students planning to obtain CPA licenses in states other than New York should also consider taking the New York state 150-hour option.) Majors in accounting must have an overall grade point average of 2.0 in accounting course work at Hofstra. In addition, they must have a C- or better in ACCT 101 , 102 , 123  and 124  whether taken at Hofstra or transferred in from another institution. Otherwise, these accounting courses must be retaken at Hofstra since no waivers will be granted for them. The requirements are: ACCT 123 , 124 , 125 , 131 , 133 ,139 , 140 135 143 , 144 ; LEGL 024 , IT 131  and electives chosen under advisement.  Students enrolled in this program will automatically earn a concentration in Digital Accounting Technology upon completion of the following five courses: IT 001  and IT 015  (business core), and ACCT 139 , ACCT 140  and IT 131  (major courses).

Students must complete all the BBA Requirements , including LEGL 020 .

CPA Program Requirements for Students Interested in CPA Licensure


Students may meet the New York state 150-hour requirement by taking one of the following three options, in addition to the course work required for the 128-hour program above.

Option I:


The 150-hour BBA Program in Accounting requires ACCT 126 , 134  and LEGL 023 , and a total of 150 undergraduate credits.

Option II:


The BBA/MS Program option is available for those qualified students* who choose to pursue an MS in Accounting or Taxation. Students who choose to apply three courses to both the undergraduate and graduate requirements must seek advisement to ensure that they complete a minimum of 150 total semester hours, at the graduate or undergraduate level, and comply with state licensing requirements, after applying nine semester hours to both the BBA and MS programs.

Students who pursue an MS in Accounting may take up to three of the following courses, which will be credited to both the BBA and MS degrees. Students in the BBA/MS-Taxation joint degree program may apply TAX 228 to both the MS in Taxation program requirements and to three semester hours of undergraduate business or free-elective requirements. In addition, students may apply any two of the five graduate courses listed below as both business electives in the MS in Taxation program and in lieu of certain required courses in the undergraduate accounting major:

The BBA/MBA Program option is available to those qualified students* who choose to pursue an MBA in one of the following areas: Accounting or Taxation; and who complete two of the following courses, which will be credited to both the BBA and MBA degrees:

*Students selecting the BBA/MS or BBA/MBA option must meet the admission requirements and achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.2 at the time of application to the MBA or MS program or upon completion of 92 semester hours of course work toward their BBA degree, whichever is later. Students must be provisionally accepted into the graduate program before they will be allowed to register for graduate courses.
