The program of studies in elementary education leading to the Master of Arts degree is designed to provide advanced study in elementary school curriculum and instruction for those holding initial certification in childhood education (Grades 1-6).

Admission Requirements
Application for admission to a Master of Arts program in the Department of Teaching, Literacy, and Leadership is made to the Office of Graduate Admission. Admission is based on a comprehensive review of multiple criteria, including the following:
- A completed application form to the Master of Arts program.
- New York state initial certification in childhood education. Applicants who have provisional certification rather than initial certification will be enrolled in a program leading to permanent certification.
- A minimum grade point average of 2.75 in each of two categories:
a. Overall undergraduate course work;
b. Course work in the liberal arts and sciences.
- Two letters of reference addressing the applicant’s success in the teaching profession and the capacity to undertake graduate study.
- A written personal statement of professional intent and rationale.
- An interview with the program director.
The department understands that any single criterion may not reliably predict a candidate’s potential for success in a graduate program. Candidates may wish to apply if they do not meet one of the criteria but feel that other aspects of their experience may compensate.
Matriculated students must complete a minimum of 24 s.h. of the master of arts program in residence at Hofstra. No more than 6 s.h. may be transferred into the program. A maximum of 12 s.h. of graduate course work leading toward the Master of Arts degree may be completed prior to matriculation in the program.
Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in order to remain in the program. Grades of D or lower will not be counted toward the graduate degree, but will be included in determining the grade point average. Program Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 35-36
The Master of Arts in elementary education consists of a minimum of 35 semester hours of graduate course work. Students must complete all course requirements from one of the following areas of specialization: Specialization Area: The Arts and Humanities
Phase I. Curriculum and Teaching Core - Semester Hours: 6
Phase II. The Arts and Humanities - Semester Hours: 12 Select four courses from the following:Phase III. Education Electives - Semester Hours: 9 Select three courses from the following:Phase IV. Culminating Thesis Courses and Field Consultation - Semester Hours: 8
Specialization Area: Curriculum Studies in Multicultural Communities
Phase I. Curriculum and Teaching Core - Semester Hours: 6
Phase II. Curriculum Studies in Multicultural Communities - Semester Hours: 12
Phase III. School of Education Electives - Semester Hours: 9
Select three courses from the following: Phase IV. Culminating Thesis Courses and Field Consultation - Semester Hours: 8
Specialization Area: Educational Technology
Phase I. Curriculum and Teaching Core - Semester Hours: 6
Phase II. Educational Technology - Semester Hours: 12
Phase III. Educational Electives - Semester Hours: 9
Select three courses from the following: Phase IV. Culminating Thesis Courses and Field Consultation - Semester Hours: 8
Graduation Requirements
- Completion of all course requirements for the Master of Arts program in elementary education (35-36 s.h.) with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Completion of all course requirements in one of the following specialization areas: The arts and Humanities; Curriculum Studies in Multicultural Communities; or Educational Technology.
- Successful completion of the master’s thesis.
- All course work in the master’s degree program must be completed within a five-year period.
Teacher Certification Requirements
Upon successful completion of degree requirements, students will be eligible to apply for the University’s recommendation for New York state certification. Contact the Office of Educational Support Services, 129 Hagedorn Hall, for information regarding any required Educational Law seminars* and other certification requirements. *Please note, as of July 1, 2013, the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education now require a new six-hour seminar for Training in Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention, required under the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA): http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/news/newsitem05162013.html. |
