Admission Requirements

Applications for admission to this advanced certificate program in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Technology  are made to the Graduate Admission Office. Admission is based on a comprehensive review of multiple criteria. The department understands that any single criterion may not reliably predict a student’s potential for success in the program. Students may consider applying even if they fail to meet one of the GPA or testing criteria but feel that other aspects of their experience might compensate.

1. Initial or professional certification in a secondary subject, grades 7-12.
2. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
3. Submission of scores on a nationally-normed graduate admission test.*
4. An interview with the middle childhood education program director.

*Please consult with the director of the program to determine which test would be best suited to you. Examples of such tests include, but are not limited to, the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), the GRE general test or the relevant GRE subject exam (if appropriate to your intended area of certification).

The program leads to an extension of certification into grades 5 and 6 for the subject area of the original certification. These areas include English, mathematics, social studies and science (biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics).

Students who hold provisional rather than initial certification are required to demonstrate completion of 6 s.h. elective credit, of which 3 s.h. must be in the teaching of literature/language arts. Program director must approve electives.

• CT 247A - Middle Childhood Curriculum: 5-6 Semester Hours: 3

• or a methods course in the primary area of certification, specific to grades 5-6

  Recommendations:

• ELED 205 - Language in the Curriculum Semester Hours: 3

• (for grades 5-6) (for majors in English education)

• SED 276 - Teaching United States History — A Projects Approach Semester Hours: 3

• (for majors in social studies education)

Graduation Requirements

1. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in overall graduate work.
2. Completion of all required Educational Law Seminars.
3. All course work taken in satisfaction of this certificate must have been taken within a five-year period.

Teacher Certification Requirements

Upon successful completion of degree requirements, students will be eligible to apply for the University’s recommendation for New York state certification. Contact the Office of Educational Support Services, 233 Hagedorn Hall, for information regarding any required Educational Law seminars* and other certification requirements. *Please note, as of December 31, 2013, the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education now require a new six-hour seminar for Training in Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention, required under the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA): http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/news/newsitem05162013.html.
