SPED 265 - Instructional Learning Strategies for Students with Disabilities, Grades 7-12


Semester Hours: 3


Fall, Spring

This course extends the special educator’s knowledge and use of the techniques and strategies that address the learning and management needs of adolescent students with disabilities in grades 7 - 12 special classes, resource rooms, and integrated co-teaching and consultant teacher settings. This course prepares the special educator to develop curricula and select appropriate instructional strategies for teaching students with a diverse range of needs, including techniques to develop reading, writing, and math skills and strategies that develop and increase executive functioning skills. Students learn the characteristics of disabilities, learn and use specific instructional strategies and researched-based methods, interpret formal assessment reports and develop informal assessments. Assessment procedures, monitoring of IEP goals, evidence-based instructional strategies, and various program approaches are explored. Current problems and issues regarding adolescents with special needs are also discussed, including transition services and self-advocacy skills. (20 hours of participant/observation hours required)
