MPH 209 - Public Health Nutrition


Semester Hours: 3


January, Fall, Spring, Summer

This course introduces students to community-based nutrition, and the national policies and programs affecting nutrition at the population level.  Topics covered will include dietary policy, including the politics of food; food labeling; food access policy, including the U.S. food assistance programs; food safety and food supply policies; community needs assessment with a focus on nutrition issues; the obesity epidemic, including the role of the food industry; environmental determinants of nutrition outcomes and efforts to improve them; the role of providers, educators and agencies involved in formulating policy and implementing programs; and nutrition advocacy. Students will use course text, and additional selected readings and resources as a basis for online discussions. Each student will thoroughly research an issue of interest and complete a research paper and professional presentation about their chosen topic.
