JRNL 227 - Advocacy Journalism

Semester Hours: 3
Advocacy journalism is a genre of journalism which combines reporting with a point of view. Today we see advocacy journalism practiced by national media outlets such as The New York Times and ProPublica, as well as by non-traditional news sources like the United Nations and Cato Institute. Throughout this course, we will compare, and contrast works of viewpoint journalism with objective reporting, which seeks balance and neutrality. In this way, students will come to understand and appreciate the full spectrum of today’s media ecosystem, enabling them to chart career paths that best suit their interests and needs, whether they choose to work at a “legacy” publication, such as a metropolitan daily newspaper, or a startup magazine with a strong editorial voice.
