NUR 304 - Population Health, Epidemiology & Statistical Methods
Semester Hours: 3
This course utilizes the concepts in population health as well as the interprofessional nature, key historical events, models, and frameworks for understanding epidemiologic concepts and health problems in diverse regional and global populations. Emphasis is placed on the principles and methods of epidemiologic investigation, appropriate summaries and displays of data, and the use of classical statistical approaches to describe the health of populations. Social determinants of health influenced by healthcare, individual behavior, social environment, physical environment, and genetics influence disparities in healthcare. Various epidemiologic study designs for investigating associations between risk factors and disease outcomes are introduced, culminating with criteria for causal inferences. The influence of epidemiology and biostatistics on legal and ethical issues is also discussed. Significant population health challenges and achievements will be analyzed to illustrate how the health of groups can be transformed by working at multiple levels of the social ecologic model. Methods for evidenced-based designs, evaluation, and critiques of health systems and community-based interventions will also be introduced.
